Effect of using golden apple snail meal as a substitute for fish meal on the growth of saim catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus)

This study evaluated the effect of replacing fishmeal with golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) meal on the growth and survival of Siamese catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus). A 60-day laboratory experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments: P0 (control), P1 (30% fishmeal + 10% snail meal), P2 (20% fishmeal + 20% snail meal), and P3 (10% fishmeal + 30% snail meal), each with five replicates. Juvenile catfish (3–5 g) were stocked in 30-liter aquaria and fed daily at 3% of body weight. Parameters measured included absolute growth, specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR). The highest performance was observed in treatment P3, with 33.6 g absolute growth, 4.0% SGR, 87% SR, and FCR of 1.19. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant effect of snail meal substitution on growth (P<0.05), while survival remained unaffected. The findings suggest that golden apple snail meal can serve as a viable alternative to fishmeal in catfish feed, improving growth performance without compromising survival, and supporting sustainable aquaculture practices.
