Asphyxia Neonatorum is a condition which the baby does not breathe spontaneously and regularly immediately after birth. The treatment of asphyxia is resuscitation to provide adequate oxygenation. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in increasing student competency in newborn resuscitation using demonstration models and self-directed learning. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method. The population in this study were all students of the Bachelor of Applied Midwifery Study Program at Poltekkes Kemenkes Mataram with a total of 78 students. The instrument used was a skill result test using a newborn resuscitation checklist which was divided into two, namely the pre test and post test. Based on data analysis using the Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney tests, the results obtained before being given the demonstration model sowed the average value of 6.67, and after the intervention was given there was an increase with an average value of 9.94 with a P-value < 0.05. Whereas the self-directed learning model before the intervention obtained an average value of 6.53 and after the intervention obtained an average value of 9.88, with P-value = 0.05, so it can be concluded that there was no difference in the effectiveness of using the demonstration model and self-directed learning in improving newborn resuscitation competence in college students. It is recommended that the development of learning models be adjusted to the material and needs of students, so as to obtain optimal results in increasing student competence.
