Abstract

Feed is an essential factor influencing the growth and survival of catfish fry and plays a significant role in the success of aquaculture practices. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of natural and artificial feeding on the growth and survival of pearl catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fry. The study was conducted over a 30-day period, from March to April 2024, at the Wet Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Almuslim. The experiment employed a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three treatments and three replications: control without supplementary feed (P0), artificial feed in the form of commercial pellets (P1), and natural feed consisting of earthworms (P2). A total of 135 catfish fry were used, with a stocking density of 15 fish per experimental unit. The observed parameters included absolute weight gain, absolute length gain, and survival rate. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at a 5% significance level. The results revealed that different feeding treatments had significant effects on all observed parameters (P<0.05). Earthworm feeding produced the highest performance, with an absolute weight gain of 7.92 g, an absolute length gain of 1.73 cm, and a survival rate of 100%. In contrast, fish fed commercial pellets exhibited an absolute weight gain of 6.02 g, an absolute length gain of 1.37 cm, and a survival rate of 84.44%. These findings indicate that earthworms have the potential to serve as an alternative natural feed source for improving the growth and survival of pearl catfish fry compared with commercial pellets under the experimental conditions.
